General laboratory diagnostics and phlebotomy

Course content

Safety measures, lab specific hygiene, disposal, consumables, physical units and measurements , measuring and registration, solutions and dilutions, centrifuges, capillary blood sampling techniques, materials for investigation and collection methods, storage and transport, influence and interference variables. Operation, handling, adjusting and maintenance of light microscopes. Choice of the correct exposure method for various questions in routine diagnostics.

Learning outcomes

The students know the importance of diagnostics and are aware of the consequences for the patients; they know the core terminology of the functionional process in the analytic process and the fundamental techniques of function and analysis; they know the preanalytical factors that influence and interfere with the parameters and that have an influence on the investigation; they are able to coolect blood. The students know the foundations of structure, use and maintenance of light microscopes. They are familiar with the physical- optical processes of light microscopy enabling the visualisation of microscopic structures in biomedical preparations. They know about microscope alignment for Köhler illumination and its cleaning and maintenance. They can detect operational and adjustment errors and can correct them independently.
