Functional diagnostics and physical foundations

Course content

Physical foundations, clinical relevance of respiratory physiological, cardiovascular and electroneurophysiological examinations; practical parameters relevant in pulmonary, cardiovascular and neurological diseases; indications and contraindications for functional diagnostic tests; technical basis of apparatus and application of selected procedures: hydrogen breath test, spirometry, bodyplethysmography, blood gas analysis, bronchospasmolysis testing, inhalation challenge testing; electrocardiography and blood pressure measurement at rest, different methods of exercise stress testing, oscillography, thermography; electroencephalography, electroneurography, evoked potentials; ultrasound investigations (Doppler sonography), quality management, documentation, validation and interpretation of the results.

Learning outcomes

The students make connections between practice-oriented parameters of cardiopulmonary and neurological diseases and their clinical aspects. They know the physical and hardware-related basics to investigate cardiopulmonary and neurological diseases. The students are capable of performing examinations in cardiopulmonary and electroneurological functional diagnostics based on selected disorder profiles taking into consideration indications, contraindications and quality assuring measures. They are able to interpret findings, make validity checks, and are able to criticize their findings according to quality criteria.
