Course content

New forms and theories of learning, professionalism and imparting knowledge to others as core tasks, concepts of digital literacies/web literacies;,differing digital communication habits of various generations and demographic groups (key words: digital natives, digital divide). Accompanying and portfolio-related activities: purposeful communication within the group of learners and course lecturers in order to build knowledge systematically, students working on their own online reputation and building their personal brand using the web, networking and managing a personal network, students documenting their own work respectively own contribution to a project on a larger scale.

Learning outcomes

Generic competencies: - Ability to develop learning strategies autonomously , - ability to communicate professionally. Field specific competencies: - practical and methodological competencies, - editorial competencies, - competencies in the field of information science, - management competencies. On the one hand, this module is about discussing the aspects of current developments relevant to the work of content strategists against the background of up-to-date literature. On the other hand, the module is themed as an "open space" allowing for flexibility and drafted non-linearilly. The topics discussed always relate to the main modules offered each semester. Every semester has one main focus which current specific topics can be related and added to. In the first semester, the characteristics of the environments web and internet are the core themes. In the second semester, the main topics are internet research, web science and digital methods. In the third semester, the distinctive features of networked societies are being discussed, as well as how their members interact. The fourth semester focuses on the competencies necessary for living and working with digital technologies (and how an understandig of them as well as competencies for using them can be provided within organizations). In this module, also fundamental questions regarding online communication will be tackled, particularly relating to media ethics and media law. Apart from that, a lecture series with constant hosts, which external guest speakers can be invited to, is part of the module. Students are encouraged to not only participate, but also contribute to the series by making presentations themselves. The lectures will mainly take place online. They will be accompanied by critical reflection and discussion, both taking place online, being components of the students' portfolios, and thus part of the grade. Furthermore, the module is intended to strenghten the students' ability to organize and coordinate their work and studies, to reflect upon learning processes, document them in a portfolio - thereby practicing the learning in a connected environment -, and to develop the processes further individually. The students learn how to gather task-related knowledge from the internet and how to be a source of knowledge for others, and they learn to organize and stage-manage collaborative learning and the exchange of knowledge as public processes. The students' portfolios are also being used in the context of other courses in the program as means of reflection and documentation.

Mode of delivery

Practical course (lecture series, partly as online events, 6 units in the 4 face-to-face phases; 20,5 hours of moderated e-learning). Accompanying and portfolio-related activities: a continuation of the topics and projects from the first and second semester. In this semester, the sector and/or the field of the master thesis are supposed to play a major role.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Bachelor degree in Communication Science (or comparable qualification)

Assessment methods and criteria

Evaluation and grading of the course-related reflective posts in the students' portfolios, evaluation of the students' contributions to the classes, extra-points for presentations given in the lecture series.
