Basics of Empirical Social Research

Course content

Generating data and handling statistical data; grouping, evaluation and interpretation of the data depending on the research question with the help of standard software (SPP, ""R"", etc.); the notion of network in sociology respectively the approaches of sociological network research. Analysis of networks employing tools like "Gephi" or "Excel Add on".

Learning outcomes

Generic competencies: - ability to think analytically Field specific competencies: - editorial skills, - management skills, - skills related to information science. After completing the module, the student can assess, interpret, and criticise the results and outcomes of studies. She/He has thorough knowledge of methods and tools provided by the social sciences that can be used to generate data. She/he knows how to use such methods and tools and is capable of designing, carrying out and evaluating her/his own studies.
