Learning outcomes

This module enables students to apply the skills acquired in modules 12 and 19. They practice their writing skills by dealing with different text types and writing abstracts. Scientific hypotheses from the topics covered in course units of semesters 1 to 5 are formulated to relate professional practice with science. The students identify current relevant research questions in the professional field of dietetics by exploring current scientific literature (in English) and by applying qualitative and quantitative research methods. They plan and write a scientific exposé, including identification, processing and analysis of current scientific literature and generate a research question for their Bachelor’s thesis (M30) and select an adequate research method for answering the question. There is also a link to the “Statistics” unit of the same module, requiring the students to integrate considerations on the statistical method selected in their exposé. The students learn which statistical methods are suitable for which research question, carry out statistical calculations using the SPSS® software and are able to plan basic statistical analyses for the Bachelor’s thesis in M30.

The students
• repeat and synthesise methods of knowledge generation from M12 and M19 and implement them in an exposé
• are able to write a high-quality exposé on topics covered in course units of semesters 1 to 5 in preparation for the Bachelor’s thesis in M30
• become familiar with the linguistic requirements of scientific papers and consolidate their knowledge through writing practices, e.g. writing abstracts in German and English
• identify current research fields in the field of dietetics and are able to generate appropriate research questions
• carry out in-depth research, analysis and critical assessment of scientific literature related to the research question at hand
• become familiar with the principles of statistics and are able to select the appropriate statistical method for answering the research question specified in the exposé and justify their choice
• are able to independently carry out statistical calculations using the statistical software SPSS®
