Supervised Internship and Counselling 1

Course content

The students
- perform nutritional counselling and therapies on patients under the supervision and instruction of professional teaching staff
- are able to apply and consolidate their specialist knowledge in the fields of dietetics for metabolic disorders (obesity, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia, etc.) and renal diseases, including dialysis
- are able to apply their counselling and communication techniques in practice and practise them in counselling sessions with patients
- are able to outline the procedure and phases of the dietetic process (diet history, assessment of nutritional status, dietetic diagnosis and assessment, planning, implementation, quality assurance, evaluation, documentation, reflection) and learn to take the individual needs of the patients into account
- are able to perform the dietetic process in practice; this involves taking a diet history, carrying out a dietetic assessment, defining the treatment objective, planning the nutritional therapy and intervention
- are able to present the dietetic process in writing and derive the necessary professional documentation
- are able to answer questions resulting from the counselling process using scientific tools such as literature searches in databases, search protocols, summarising and presenting the results

Learning outcomes

In this module students supplement their knowledge acquired in modules M12 “Scientific Methodology and Professional English” and M13 “Psychology and Nutrition” with advanced professional, methodological and social communicative competence, self-competence and scientific competence. This allows them to independently provide nutritional advice on defined indications in an individual setting based on the professional theoretical fundamentals of nutrition science and nutritional therapy. They follow the procedural model of the dietetic process, use different verbal communication and counselling techniques, reflect on them and develop their own counselling strategies.

The students
- are able to independently plan, carry out and reflect on their first nutritional counselling sessions based on the procedural model of the dietetic process in a quality assured manner
- develop their communication skills, empathy, conflict management skills, capacity to accept criticism and capacity for reflection
- are made familiar with fundamental verbal communication and counselling techniques and can apply them in practice
- are able to communicate nutritional information in language understandable to the patient and establish a relationship of trust with the patient and his/her relatives
- can answer questions asked during nutritional counselling sessions based on sound scientific expertise

Books, journals and relevant current primary literature will be announced by the lecturers at the start of the course or are included in the relevant syllabus.
