As a part of a cooperation project between the University of Applied Sciences – FH Joanneum and the Graz-based bioimage analysis software provider KML Vision<\/a>, students of the eHealth<\/a> study program get the opportunity to gain practical experience in a real-world bioinformatics plugin development project.<\/p>\n

The student project goals<\/h4>\n

Choosing the right master thesis project is crucial for the future career prospects of health informatics graduates. By participating in the KML Vision-mentored project eHealth students Katja Hämmerle, Fabian Fratzl and Fabian Ziegler get the chance to work on an exciting coding project as a part of their master theses.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The goal of this outstanding project is to develop a new plugin for the bioimage analysis software Fiji. Fiji<\/a> is a freely available open-source bioimage analysis program that builds upon ImageJ<\/a>. Researchers and developers can contribute to the growing collection of Fiji extensions by making new plugins available for use to the scientific community.<\/p>\n

By drafting a fully-functioning bioimage analysis plugin eHealth students get the opportunity to explore the principles of bioinformatics through concrete problem solving and real-world scenarios.<\/p>\n

Meet the project mentors<\/h4>\n

This exciting student project is realized under the supervision of Dr. Markus Bödenler<\/a>, lecturer at the institute of eHealth at FH JOANNEUM. The eHealth Master’s program at FH JOANNEUM offers broad-spectrum vocational training in the field of health informatics, ranging from data analysis in clinical research and machine learning to IT management in healthcare.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

KML Vision<\/strong> is an award-winning company in the field of bioimage analysis. The company’s expertise lies in the development of AI-driven image analysis applications which allow researchers worldwide to extract complex quantitative information from biomedical image data. Jakob Hatzl, MSc<\/a> supervises the student project on behalf of KML Vision. Both Jakob Hatzl and KML Vision managing director Dr. Philipp Kainz<\/a> are successful degree holders of the eHealth bachelor’s and master’s program and actively support future graduates by engaging in know-how exchange and lecturing.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The final software products<\/h4>\n

The final product of the student project is intended to become a Java based SDK (Software Development Kit) for the IKOSA Platform and a plugin making existing IKOSA bioimage analysis algorithms<\/a> available for use directly in Fiji \/ ImageJ. This offers a valuable real-world experience for eHealth graduates, which they can add to their software development portfolio.<\/p>\n

The eHealth Institute strives to support regional companies and institutions of the healthcare industry with highly qualified graduates of the eHealth degree program, which is unique in Austria. On the other hand, the current contact and the professional input gained from successful high-tech companies such as KML Vision is important for the quality of the training.
