Course content

Basic aspects of material science are presented in the first part of the lecture:

  1. Design aspects and mechanical basics:
    load cases, strain, stress, Hooke's law
  2. Solid materials with crystalline structure:
  3. bonds, lattice
  4. Alloys:
    phase diagrams, structure, Fe-C system
  5. Corrosion
  6. Nonferrous materials
  7. Materials' selection

 Basic aspects of construction materials especially from the point of view of heat losses:

  1. Characteristics of construction and insulation materials
  2. Typical building elements
  3. Heat transmission and heat losses
  4. Thermal bridges
  5. Thermal refurbishment of buildings
  6. Airtightness and vapour diffusion

Learning outcomes

Basic knowledge of materials with technological relevance with their physical characteristics.

Basic knowledge of thermal characteristics of construction material and typical applications in buildings.
