Course content

• Repetition of fundamental technological topics and characteristics of the different material groups
• Current developments in metallic materials, taking into account the product properties and processing processes
• Current developments in non-metallic materials, taking into account product properties and processing processes
• Special properties of plastics and composite materials with regard to application and processing
• Materials for additive manufacturing, their applications and technological limits
• Analysis and evaluation of materials in terms of product life cycle and sustainability

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students are able to:

• Select materials for concrete use cases in the context of product development processes
• Evaluate and compare materials on the basis of their mechanical, technological, physical, chemical and manufacturing properties
• Analyze and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of material groups
• Propose material alternatives based on design or application-specific boundary conditions
• Assess the material life cycle of the materials and evaluate them for sustainability
