Complex Case Studies 1

Course content

Students develop (complex) case studies describing geriatric clients in the activity fields of self-care, productivity and leisure. The module aims to provide students with comprehensive professional action competence based on the occupational therapy process and enable smooth transfer from theory to practice.

The students • apply strategies of solution-oriented, independent learning by formulating, elaborating and presenting learning goals. • acquire basic knowledge and action strategies concerning concrete occupational therapy procedures in daily practice. • learn to implement individual steps of the occupational therapy process in theory by learning to collect information, analyse problems, find and critically examine solutions. • consolidate their knowledge of clinical reasoning processes in occupational therapy and are able to apply and reflect on them in case studies.      

Learning outcomes

The students • learn to analyse a topic or a question, find and use suitable sources of information and finally compare, select and implement appropriate solutions. • enhance their problem solving skill by acquiring knowledge that can be used flexibly and by developing interdisciplinary competences. • are made familiar with the concept of self-directed learning. • acquire basic knowledge and action strategies that help them cope with future problems and motivate them to engage in life-long learning. • enhance their problem solving skills through logical analytical thinking. • take into account all steps of the occupational therapy process when developing the case studies. • expand their social and team skills through group work. • practice to communicate and argue relevant content of the occupational therapy process to the target group.  • are actively involved in their own learning process by independently constructing their knowledge.
