International Strategic Management

Course content

This course invites students to get insights into the basics of strategic management. Beginning with a theoretical introduction to the principles of strategy and strategic management, the importance of conducting a strategic analysis will be demonstrated. Several tools to analyse a firm's environmemt such as Porter's Five Forces, the PESTEL analysis or tools to analyse competitors or customers will be presented. Furthermore the most important tools for analysing a firms' resources and capabilities will be shown.
In addition basics in developing business and corporate-level strategy options will be indicated. Before ending the course with showing strategic management in different contexts, the implementation and controlling process in strategy will be part of it.

This practice-oriented course will integrate active participation of the students through case study work.  

Learning outcomes

We would like to offer an introduction to the concept of strategic management. Students will gain a clear focus on methods and the ideas behind them. We want students to gain insight into some essential strategy instruments. At the end of this course, participants will be able to: -know the importance for strategic management; - understand key concepts of strategy (e.g Porters 5 Forces, resources and capabilities, generic strategies of cost leadership or technological differentiation)

Furthermore they will be guided to active participance in the course in taking the roles of consultants.
