Baby care and newborn physiology 1

Course content

This course deals with the initial care and assessment of the newborn, general care of the newborn and the baby and issues of physiology of the early and late newborn stage. The students are given an overview of the tasks of the midwife in the early and late newborn stage. This course integrates theoretical knowledge and practical skills of how to handle a newborn/baby. and aims at a structured initial assessment of the newborn (signs of maturation, diagnosing malformation) for early detection of pathology.

Learning outcomes

2. The students can
• counsel and care for the woman in the pre-, peri –and postnatal phases as well as for the newborn and infant independently and efficiently.
• conduct professional teaching sessions in the practice setting for women and their families
• recognize psychosocial changes and development and initiate the appropriate measures
• recognize the responsibility of other health care professionals and initiate interdisciplinary intervention
