Course content

This course focuses on the knowledge of breast anatomy and the physiology of lactation, breast feeding and breast feeding behavior in the first two weeks of life: breast milk production, physiology and sucking reflexes, signs of hunger, drinking amounts, breastfeeding frequency, positions and background conditions for a successful breastfeeding relationship right from the start.
The students are familiar with the theory of breastfeeding and can give breastfeeding support in the early puerperium. They are able to support the mother under normal breastfeeding conditions. They know the national and international breastfeeding guidelines and the most popular breast feeding internet sites.

Learning outcomes

2. The students can
• counsel and care for the woman in the pre-, peri –and postnatal phases as well as for the newborn and infant independently and efficiently.
• conduct professional teaching sessions in the practice setting for women and their families
• recognize psychosocial changes and development and initiate the appropriate measures
• recognize the responsibility of other health care professionals and initiate interdisciplinary intervention
