Breast feeding support in special situations

Integrated course, 1.00 ECTS

Course content

In this course the students learn to recognize and differentiate between the causes of different breast feeding problems and get to know challenging breastfeeding contexts (breast feeding after breast surgery, breastfeeding with sore nipples, too much and too little milk, failure to thrive, breastfeeding of the newborn) The students are given the foundations for planning and managing treatment and support (weaning, using breast pumps and formula food). They learn to evaluate national and international breast feeding guidelines and the most popular breast feeding internet sites.

Learning outcomes

The students are able to identify and to qualify various complications with breast-feeding. The students acquire profound knowledge to plan and to provide treatment and to arrange supportive measures. Students will be trained to advice on weaning, collection and keeping of milk and preliminary solid food. Up-to-date national and international breastfeeding recommendations are common knowledge and familiar with relevant web pages.
