Course content

• Relational database management systems
• Knowledge of what a data model is, what it is required for and the purpose of data modelling.
• Being able to develop a data model from a process model.
• Understanding relational data models, relational integrity and normalisation.
• Explain the term "Data Warehouse" and describe its field of usage.
• Gain knowledge of and describe the components of a database and its main tasks
• Understand the function of selection criteria for desktop, server data and database systems.
• Use SQL for devising statistical analysis.
• Comprehend the pathways and interaction of data (import, export, interfaces, ODBC, OLE DB, EDI...)
• Generating desktop databases (tables, forms, reports)
• Comprehend and explain the context of all elements of a "database map".

Learning outcomes

The students are able to
• solve business and technical problems by efficiently working with IT applications.
• develop individual software for industrial management purposes.
• independently search data-base applications (data modelling) and develop them for industrial management purposes.
• develop research tools for data-base management systems (SQL queries, ad-hoc reporting).
Modern ICT systems influence the framework conditions for companies decisively. The use of ICT systems, however, does not always lead to the desired results. For this reason, dealing with ICT requires a certain degree of expertise and methodical competence
