3D Media Design

Course content

The students will learn advanced concepts and usage of 3D technology, primarily for real-time use as interactive visualisations or as part of virtual and augmented reality systems.

The course topics are:
  • Modeling of objects from low to high complexity (subdivision modelling, sculpting)
  • Creating various materials and surfaces consistent with a "Physically-Based Rendering" workflow (incl. UV mapping, texture painting)
  • Scene layout, management, optimisation and lighting
  • Optimization (baking, retopo) and export for real-time engines like Unity

Learning outcomes

Students can accomplish the following:

  • Modelling, import and adjustment of 3D polygon models with medium to high complexity
  • Creation of realistic materials with self-painted or photo textures
  • Optimizing created models for use in real-time systems

Mode of delivery

Prerequisites and co-requisites

The course will be executed with a computer. It is recommended to have your own laptop; the software Blender is free and Open Source. A mouse with physically separated buttons is strongly recommended.
