With the methods of strength theory, components can be dimensioned economically and designed safely. In addition to the determination of stresses and deformations in the workpiece, the course also takes into account the reaction of the materials to the respective stresses. Contents: basic stress types (tension\/compression, bending, shear, torsion), Mohr’s stress circle, oblique bending, buckling and combined stresses. The course treats components of aircraft and their influence in order to arrive at an appropriate configuration (fuselage, wings and empennage). The influence of geometry caused by special mission requirements such as stealth capabilities in combat aircraft. After deriving the wing geometry from the previously determined wing loading and mission requirements, the course continues with the calculation and elaboration of the data sets in aerodynamics, propulsion and masses. Estimation and calculation methods for aerodynamic forces (lift and drag from advanced wing theory) and moments (neutral point) in sub-, trans- and supersonic velocity ranges. Determination of an appropriate aerofoil profile and creation of the aerofoil, wing and aircraft polars.
