Project: International Business Development and Community Work

Course content

In this hands-on project class one group of students can apply theoretical knowledge aquired in former modules, but especially in M1, M4, M6, M8, M12, M16, M17, M24 and in the accompanying entrepreneurship class and become visionaries and change agents
1.) for current or future enterprise development. Students set up a project team with the aim to either design a new enterprise or to defy an outmoded business model. Thus, within project teams students systematically understand and conceptually design a new business model or systematically analyze and renovate an old one. By working closely with industry experts students will understand at a much deeper level (potential) customers, distribution modes, networks, revenue streams, core value propositions.
2.) for community development. Students learn about and collaborate with the regional community with the objective to provide service and outreach to community members. Depending on community needs, the projects will be in the area of participant observation (e.g. students evaluating a strategy of a NPO), offering acquired business skills (e.g. students helping setting up an accounting system) or learning through teaching (e.g. students offering business classes). Thus, students are gaining an understanding on how communities work, how to analyze communities and how to mobilize resources in communities.

Learning outcomes

At a time of growing social, economic and environmental challenges this module enables students to engange with entrepreneurial enterprises or with the community. Upon successful completion of this module students will understand the integration of people, environment and processes in entrepreneurship and communities and be able to write, articulate, and present a business model and/or business plan that will be ready for investor review.
In specific the following competences will be aquired:
-to contrast and evaluate different business opportunities by combining and applying methods and tools learned from market research, international business, marketing and controlling/finance and law modules
-to analyze and generate consumer and competitor profiles by gathering and critically analyzing and interpreting primary and secondary data
-to strategically identify products/services needed by a community based on research
-to generate and visualize a sustainable business models by applying creative tools such as design thinking
-to justify and defend strategic decisions taken in front of a costumer or jury board in interim and final presentations
-to critically reflect and professionally respond to feedback from a costumer or jury board
