Course content

Principles and advanced knowledge of molecular diagnostics, diagnostic strategies and procedures, carrier and test systems, biomarkers, criteria for method selection, practical examples in medicine, industry and environment ( detection of genetic diseases, forensic medicine, detection of genetically modified organsims, detection of pathogens in body fluids, drinking water, animal feeds and food); methods with a focus on their application in diagnostics: immunoassays (ELISA, immuno PCR, Westernblot), PCR (real time PCR, digital PCR), mutation analysis (SNP genotyping, DNA fingerprinting), microarray based methods (CGH arrays, SNP arrays, protein and antibody arrays), quality assurance

Learning outcomes

(1) The students are able to describe the advantages and disadavatages of methods of molecular techniques ( above all in the fields of molecular diagnostics, nanotechnology, OMICS- technologies, molecular biological and gene technological applications.) (2) They can choose the appropriate question- specific molecular techniques, plan and carry out additional experiements, evaluate, validate and interpret the results. (3) They are able to discuss and apply measures for quality assurance. (4) They can plan and discuss developmental steps in the production of recombinant proteins (medications, vaccines, food additives).
