Mag. rer. soc. oec. Christoph Marek,* 1976 in Vienna, is sociologist, author and musician.

He studied Sociology and English and American Studies in Graz and Oxford. Freelance author and editor for various media and cultural institutions (a.o. Falter, HDA – Haus der Architektur Graz, springfestival, testcard, Intro-Graz-Spection, KSG/ARTfaces). Radio shows for Radio Helsinki, contributions and symposia for steirischer herbst, Forum Stadtpark, Ö1 and FM4. Texts and translations on questions of cultural theory and pop culture. A sociological monography about the genesis of pop and the musical culture of the German "Schlager": "Pop/Schlager. Eine Analyse der Entstehungsprozesse populärer Musik im US-amerikanischen und deutschsprachigen Raum" (LIT, 2006).


Music releases between avantgarde and song under various alias, a.o. as Marek on niesom and Spa Mayerling on pumpkin records. Curator of the music programme of the festival "absolutely free – Der Woodstockeffekt", stylistically heterogeneous concert events from the periphery of pop culture as part of the association werk02.

Since 2010 Christoph Marek has been teaching at the institute "Design & Communication" at FH JOANNEUM, where he holds the courses "Kreativ Texten 1-3" and "Cultural Studies" and teaches popcultural theory as part of "International Development in Economics, Politics and Culture". His teaching has been awarded with the Teaching Award of FH JOANNEUM in 2015.
