Profile

Technical profile

My field of expertise:

Simulation: We simulate a technical device or a part of it on the computer - this is faster and cheaper than realizing a test setup. And it is easy and above all safe to try something out.

Control engineering: This is about getting a system to execute something exactly as I want it to. For example, the laser beam in a DVD drive must read a track that is narrower than a thousandth of a millimeter. The control technology ensures that this is done automatically.

My most exciting project with students:

The construction of a gearbox test bench for planetary gearboxes to determine their efficiency.

My most exciting research project:

The modelling and control of a magnetostrictive actuator: the change in length of ferromagnetic material in a magnetic field is exploited (this effect is also responsible for the humming of transformers). Special materials can be used to achieve length changes in the µm range, for example to actuate valves. Such devices are also used to generate and damp vibrations.

Active at FH JOANNEUM since: 1998

This is what I did before

Secondary Technical College for Mechanical eEgineering
Study of electrical engineering at the Graz University of Technology
Research associate at JOANNEUM RESEARCH
As a teacher

That's what I expect from my students:

That they also deal with the contents outside the courses and use the laboratories to use the teaching contents on their own setups.

Personal Aspects

My greatest passion is... playing drums.

My favourite course as a student... the courses on control engineering with Professor Schneider at Graz University of Technology were very interesting for me in terms of content. But Professor Schneider's didactics were particularly impressive: Despite the sometimes very demanding content, it was possible to follow the course to the end without any great learning effort.
