On June 17 2026, the event Women in Artificial Intelligence (Women in AI or WAI) took place at the Technical University in Graz.Women in AI has the vision to close the gender gap in the field of AI by strengthening women and stressing the importance for diversity in AI in programming of algorithms as well as by the selection and presentation of data.
RADIUS at “Women in AI”: Bridging Law and Technical Standards
Isabella Danda from the company Ideenreich gave the welcoming speech on this rather hot summer evening to an audience of about 60 people, the majority being women. After that, Sabine Proßnegg who had joined in for the first time, talked about the FFG (Coin) funded FH JOANNEUM project RADIUS.
Sabine briefly presented the aims and contents of RADIUS and ventured then into the legal research done in RADIUS. First results there showed clearly that while legal documents like the AI Act and the GDPR are highly relevant they are often difficult to understand for people not from the academic or legal world. Here, technical norms can serve as a translation that operationalize the legal rules into technically implementable tasks. In addition, legal texts themselves refer more and more often to technical norms simply out of the necessity to be able to adapt to a quickly changing digital world. To sum up, in RADIUS technical norms not only concretizise the sometimes vague legal norms but they also help to understand and put into practice the aims of these legal texts. At the end of the talk, Sabine invited the participants to hand in conference papers or posters or simply to participate at the AI Summit Styria 2026, the main Radius AI event in October. Human-Centered Personalization: Bilateral AI Approaches
The next two speeches were given by Univ.-Prof. Dr. techn. Elisabeth Lex from the Institute of Human-Centred Computing at the TU Graz and her colleague Ass. Prof. Dr. techn. Bettina Könighofer. Elisabeth Lex talked about “Bilateral AI for Human-Centered Personalization”. She pointed out that personalization technologies increasingly shape how people access information, products, and services. However, developing personalized systems requires advances in machine learning (ML) as well as a deeper understanding of human behavior and preferences. Elisabeth Lex presented her research on human-centered personalization and user modelling. She showed how ML can be combined with knowledge graphs and cognitive models to create personalized systems that better reflect human needs, support user understanding, and thus provide a foundation for trustworthy AI.
Trustworthy Autonomous Intelligence and Symbolic AI
In the second speech, Bettina Könighofer ventured into the topic of “BilAI Approaches for Trustworthy Autonomous Intelligence”. In her research, she also explores approaches for combining deep reinforcement learning with symbolic AI to solve complex sequential decision-making tasks. The goal is to enable AI agents to learn optimal behaviour while adhering to complex requirements, such as legal and ethical rules, as well as advanced safety constraints. In this speech, the very close connection between Law and Technology became clearly visible, just like in RADIUS.
