Sabrina Berger, BSc, MSc

Graduate from Softwaredesign and IT and Mobile Security

Sabrina Berger studied Softwaredesign and IT & Mobile Security, now works as Head of ICT and Digitalization at Montanuniversität Leoben.

🎓This is what I studied:

📚My job: Head of ICT and Digitalization at Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria.

📭 This is how you can reach me: sabrina.berger@unileoben.ac.at

In my free time: my favorite thing to do is sports in nature.

Coolest experience on the job: As Head of ICT, my coolest experience so far was definitely a project in which I specifically initiated changes as part of a university-wide digitalization process. It wasn’t just about introducing new systems, but above all about bringing about real change in the team’s way of working and mindset.

When I was little, I wanted to be a sportswoman, today I am CIO of Montanuniversität Leoben.

If I hadn’t studied Softwaredesign and IT & Mobile Security, I wouldn’t be an IT manager now.

This is where I spent my time after the classes: having coffee with colleagues.

The best food on campus: Schnitzel.

My favorite place on campus: in front of a coffee machine.

This is how I celebrated my graduation: Electric Love Festival with my sister and friends.

Tell us what your job is without telling us what your job is: firewall between problems and panic.

If my studies were a song, it would be Don’t Stop Believin – perseverance was sometimes more important than anything else.

You definitely learn that during your studies: To grow beyond yourself, stress resistance.

The best course was Software Architecture.

I struggled a bit with this course: Algorithms & Data Structures.

Fun fact from the course? Unnecessary knowledge? In online courses, make sure you switch off the camera and microphone before you go to the toilet 😀

Studying is sometimes really challenging, but that’s what makes it so valuable – you grow with every ‘aha’ moment. If you keep at it, you not only get really good specialist knowledge, but also the freedom to really make a difference later on.

About my job

I am Head of ICT and Digitalization and am responsible for the management of IT personnel, change management in the IT area and the coordination and implementation of digitalization projects. My path to this position began with an apprenticeship and led me through various positions – from employee to team leader – to my current management role. Above all, my studies taught me perseverance, analytical thinking and leadership skills.

What I particularly like about my job is the dynamic nature of the IT sector, the opportunity to actively make a difference and the close collaboration with my team. On the other hand, I don’t enjoy the sometimes very time-consuming bureaucracy. Both specialist knowledge and strong soft skills such as empathy, organizational talent and stress resistance are crucial for my job.

A particular highlight of my career to date has been the successful introduction of new structures and processes in the ICT area. My main goals for the future are to increase efficiency and focus more on sustainability in IT. It’s easy to combine work and studies – as long as you keep at it, don’t put things off and make the most of every deadline.
