Workshops in summer term 2022

Academic writing: How do we get our research ideas across to our readers?

An increasing number of publications at Austrian higher education institutions are written in English. This workshop is designed to prepare and support lecturers and researchers in meeting this demand by strengthening their academic writing skills in English and enabling them to clearly express their ideas from their initial thesis to the publication of the final text. Thus, participants will have the opportunity to work on improving the structure, style, and coherence of their articles. To this end, they are encouraged to bring their own texts to class.

The workshop is held in English and invites all teachers and staff members of FH JOANNEUM.

English for office staff at FH JOANNEUM degree programmes

At FH JOANNEUM, an** increasing number of students are starting their English-taught degree programmes without any knowledge of German** and only pick up German, if at all, once they have begun their course. It is therefore harder for them to navigate and plan their studies than for their German-speaking colleagues. The administrative processes and associated terminology are often a mystery for this target group, which does not make your work in the office any easier!

Working in the office, you also have lots of contact with other target groups who can only speak or write English, either in person, on the phone or by email (e.g. telephone or email enquiries from interested parties / applicants, lecturers with regard to ERASMUS mobility, participants of Staff Weeks etc.).

CAMPUS LinguaNEUM can provide support with such communication situations and help you feel more confident.

From winter term 2021/22, there will be a choice of** two consecutive workshops**, whereby the Follow-Up Workshop can only be chosen after successful attendance of the Basic Workshop. In addition, the Basic Workshop is part of the Applied Office for Secretariats. If you have already attended the modules of the Applied Office and did not have a Basic Workshop to choose from, you can of course still register for it. Just contact us for further details!

Textbook presentation: Momente

For a variety of moments of success in language learning. The new generation of textbooks from Hueber.

Learning is changing. The new Common European Framework of Reference now says it even more clearly: language acquisition is competence acquisition. Learning does not mean cramming content, but acquiring skills and building bridges between languages and cultures thanks to plurilingual and pluricultural competences.

In the (finally-again present!) seminar, we will introduce the new textbooks Momente (for the basic level) and Vielfalt (for the intermediate level). In addition to an insight into the conception of the textbooks, their structure and content, we will show a variety of exercise types and try out activities directly that can be used in both face-to-face and digital lessons.

This is because moments and variety optimally integrate interactive exercises into the learning process, so that real lessons can be linked with virtual lessons as needed. The handling is very simple and enables teachers to lead their participants even better and faster to the learning goal.

Speaker: Lukas Mayrhofer: trainer and lecturer for DaF/DaZ since 1999, teacher training at home and abroad; seminar organiser and lecturer at Kultur & Sprache (ÖAD/BMBWF); textbook author and lecturer for Hueber-Verlag; teaching assignment at FH BFI Vienna. * Time: Thursday, 9 June 2022, 14.00-16.30 hrs. * Location: FH JOANNEUM Graz, Eggenberger Allee 11, 1st floor, room 124, 8020 Graz.
