Profile

Birgit Phillips has served as Head of the Department of Learning, Innovation and Technology at FH JOANNEUM (formerly ZML – Innovative Learning Scenarios) since July 2024. Her involvement began in 2022, when she assumed academic leadership of the university’s professional development programs in higher education pedagogy, transitioning to a full-time role in October 2023. Her work focuses on advancing digital teaching, integrating AI applications into educational processes, and strengthening pedagogical expertise across research, development, and practice.

Before joining FH JOANNEUM, she was Chief Learning Officer at an EdTech start-up dedicated to educational offerings in the field of entrepreneurial sustainability aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. She also held a professorship at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland for eight years and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Graz on the design and impact of learning environments.

Since 2014, Birgit has worked in leadership development, with a focus on communication, new work cultures, and learning experience design. Her professional projects and personal travels have taken her to more than 80 countries—intercultural collaboration is a defining feature of her profile.

She holds a doctorate in interdisciplinary educational sciences from the University of Klagenfurt and has completed two Master’s programs: Smart EdTech & Co-Creativity for Educational Innovation (Université Côte d’Azur) and Transcultural Competence & Adult Education (University of Graz).

Birgit’s contributions to teaching and research have earned her multiple honors, including the European University Teaching Excellence Award (2022) and the Patricia Cranton Research Award from Columbia University (2018).

She is actively involved in international academic networks, including the AI in Education Forum at the University of Oxford and the Working Group on AI and Scientific Integrity of ÖAWI. She serves as a peer reviewer for international journals, is Country Director Austria for the STAR Scholars Network, academic advisor to the Council for Teacher Education & Management (India), and is certified by Austrian Standards as an examiner for AI project managers according to ISO norms.
