Eirik Velta BSc, Msc

Graduate from Electronic Engineering

From mastering circuit theory he once struggled with to helping engineer the Volvo EX60, Eirik proves that going the extra mile in your studies is the best investment you can make in your career.

🎓What I studied:

💪🍃💛  My job: Electronics Design Engineer at Volvo Cars AB in Gothenburg, Sweden

Me in three emojis: 💪🍃💛

In my free time: I enjoy exploring everything, whether it is out in nature or in the city to see the sites.

If you did a semester abroad: I would’ve loved to take a semester abroad at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland because of the interesting history and culture, and also because of the excellent engineering department.

When I was little, I wanted to become someone who builds things that help people. Today I am an Electronics Engineer with the right skillset to do exactly that.

If I hadn’t studied Electronics Engineering, I would be studying to become a doctor either in internal medicine or as a surgeon.

Here is where I spent my time after the lectures: I studied during the Austrian COVID lockdown which meant most of the time we were inside, but this was also nice since I had a lot of time to study and I hung out with my Austrian fiancee (now wife). We cooked, watched movies and played video games together.

This is how I celebrated my graduation: My parents came to visit from Norway and my fiancee at the time (now wife) and my mother in law all celebrated by having dinner at a restaurant at Schlossberg in Graz, Austria.

What you definitely learn in my study programme: You definitely learn that in order to succeed you have to be open, kind and eager to learn. That is what is gonna give you the best experience and I truly learnt that.

The best course was: I had many that I really enjoyed, such as Electromagnetic Systems, where we learned more about Maxwell’s equations, antenna theory, and much more. But I think my favorite was Data Structures & Algorithms, taught by Mr. Netzberger, as I really liked his teaching style and the content was very interesting to me.

This course was a challenge for me: I struggled with Analog Circuit Design, as at the time I had a hard time wrapping my head around complex circuit theory — but interestingly enough, this is a subject I excel at now in my current job. It is because I struggled during my studies that I took extra care to learn more about it and to apply it fully in my professional career.

Fun fact from my studies? Useless knowledge? I hit a speed bump while writing my master’s thesis, but my now-wife, who is a project leader, created a weekly schedule for me — outlining when to work on my thesis, when to take breaks, and which chapters to write at which time. She color-coded everything, and it helped me finish my thesis ahead of schedule.

These years will pass by in an instant, so be sure to enjoy them to the fullest while you can. Be eager to learn and go the extra mile — it will pay off!

About my job

As an Electronics Design Engineer at Volvo Cars in Gothenburg, Sweden, my work spans three core areas: supporting component sourcing, contributing to concept and system design, and working on PCB layout — all within the Interior Systems department. My path to Volvo Cars came naturally: after finishing my studies, my wife took a new job in Gothenburg, and the position at Volvo aligned perfectly with my career goals. My Electronics Engineering background — especially my specialization in Automotive Control — prepared me exceptionally well, giving me a strong foundation in circuit design, model-based system design, software architecture, EMC, and radar technology.

What I love most about the job is bringing cutting-edge, cost-efficient electronics expertise into the automotive world. The highlight of my career so far? Helping build the new Volvo EX60. That said, one downside is that building a car takes enormous time and effort, and it can feel like forever before you see the result on the road. Looking ahead, I am transitioning into a new role as a Power Electronics Design Engineer in the commercial and industrial lighting industry — following my true passion for electronics and software development.
