The coolest internship was: in the neonatal intensive care unit – NEO1 for short – at Graz University Hospital
When I was little, I wanted to be a nurse; today, I am a qualified healthcare and nursing professional.
If I hadn’t studied Healthcare and Nursing, I would have been…: I never had a Plan B; this has always been my dream job.

About my studies
If my studies were a song, it would be: ‘Stronger’ by Kelly Clarkson. Because studying healthcare and nursing is mentally and emotionally demanding, but it also makes you stronger. You grow with every placement, every exam, every encounter. The song symbolises the resilience, compassion and perseverance that nursing students develop.
If my studies were a film, it would be: Heldin
If my studies were an animal, it would be: An elephant, because this animal embodies strength, intelligence, compassion and loyalty. They never forget, show compassion and remain calm and composed even in difficult situations. These are all qualities that are fostered during your studies.
If my studies were a superpower, it would be: “Emotional telepathy” – In the nursing profession, it is essential to show empathy and recognise patients’ unspoken needs, even when they are unable to express themselves clearly. This ‘superpower’ refers to the ability to respond sensitively, read between the lines and respond to people on an individual basis, particularly in challenging care situations.
What you definitely learn in my study programme: to be flexible (shift work, challenging shifts, a varied mix of patients, etc.)
The best course was: Simulation
This course was a challenge for me: Fundamentals of Medicine 1
Fun fact from my studies? Before I realised that some simulation manikins blink and ‘breathe’ – or rather, that their chests can rise and fall – it gave me quite a fright.
My advice for you
A degree in Healthcare and Nursing is an interesting, varied and challenging course involving lots of practical skills and work placements. Keep an open mind, ask questions and make the most of every opportunity to learn. It’s well worth it.
About my job
I work in the neonatal intensive care unit, looking after both premature and full-term babies. My main responsibilities include providing initial care, involving parents in the care process, and setting up continuous and intermittent drips. I got this job following an internship and an interview with the ward manager. During my degree, I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence for this responsible work through paediatric lectures, simulations and placements. I particularly value the close collaboration within the interdisciplinary team, the precision and medical expertise, and the progress made by our little patients. The emotional strain is a challenge. Empathy, patience and accuracy are essential. My greatest sense of achievement comes from the appreciation of the parents and the early detection of critical conditions. I would like to continue developing my skills through further training and intensive courses.
