Miriam Sagmeister, BA MA

Graduate from International Management

Miriam Sagmeister combines political work with her passion for storytelling and stage performance – from shaping Graz´s education landscape to hosting major international events.

🎓What I studied:

  • Bachelor’s degree – Internationales Management (Management Internationaler Geschäftsprozesse)
  • Master’s degree – Public Communications

My job: Education Officer and Freelance Moderator for the City of Graz and “The Storyteller´s Club” in Graz, Austria.

📭 How to reach me:

Me in three emojis: 🥓💃🏼❤️‍🔥

In my free time: I`m running a dance club together with my three best friends.

The coolest internship was: Project assistant at a hip-hop festival in Berlin.

I spent my semester abroad in: Antwerp / Belgium

When I was little, I wanted to be a fashion designer, today I am a political advisor, moderator, and dance teacher.

If I hadn’t studied International Management, I would be a journalist for a fashion magazine.

Here is where I spent my time after the lectures: At the dance school.

The best food on campus: Potato wedges from the canteen.

My favorite spot on campus: The red leather couch in front of the lecture hall.

This is how I celebrated my graduation: With a fellow student and Aperol in Trieste.

Tell us what your job is, without telling us what your job is: No day is like the other.

If my studies were a song, it would be: The Show Must Go On – Queen. No matter how long the nights, how tough the exam, or how bad the time management: The show must go on!

If my studies were a movie, it would be: Mowgli. At the beginning I felt like I didn’t really fit in – fresh from high school straight into management studies, surrounded by colleagues with more professional or business school experience. Even though I brought different skills than typically expected in management, my biggest learning was: Go your own way, you’ll still be part of the pack.

If my studies were an animal, it would be: Monkey – I swung from assignment to assignment and grew beyond myself in unexpected ways.

If my studies were a superpower, it would be: Speed, Flash-level – A programme that prepares you for a life in the fast lane.

What you definitely learn in my study programme: Giving presentations on a Steve Jobs level.

The best course was: Process Management.

This course was a challenge for me: Cost Accounting and Finance.

In the end, we are most successful when driven by passion. Stick with it and never give up, because today’s challenges will turn into tomorrow’s stories worth telling.

About my job

As Education Officer for the City of Graz, I contribute to shaping the local education landscape, manage processes and projects for childcare and compulsory schools, and coordinate with stakeholders from politics, NGOs, and educational associations.

In addition, I work as a freelance moderator, hosting events and workshops and implementing multimedia projects such as vlogs.

What I particularly value in both roles is that no two days are alike. Each day is exciting, pushes me out of my comfort zone, and motivates me to keep learning and developing.

Some highlights in my career as Education Officer include contributing to major projects such as developing an education strategy for the City of Graz and the expansion of compulsory schools. As a moderator, unforgettable moments include hosting the “Long Night of Stories” at the sold-out Schauspielhaus Graz and moderating for five days in English at the Hip-Hop World Championship in Skopje in front of 6,000 people.

Skills needed in my job: Independence, self-reflection, empathy, strong communication and rhetoric, and self-confidence.

Biggest achievement so far: Every day in my work as Education Officer feels like a big and small highlight at the same time, because I can actively contribute to long-term changes in the educational landscape of Graz.

Next steps:
As Education Officer, I want to show that politics can be “cool.” Whoever gets involved actively shapes the future – and active participation is essential if we want to live in a city fit for the future.
As a moderator, I am looking forward to more international assignments soon. In Graz and Austria, my goal is to host more high-profile events and to help young people overcome their fear of the stage.
