Thomas Rottensteiner completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes at FH JOANNEUM and has remained professionally connected to his alma mater.
🎓What I studied:
💻 My job: Student advisor and event coordinator at FH JOANNEUM in Graz, Austria
📭 How to get in touch: Employee portrait, LinkedIn
Me in three emojis: ⚽ 🏋️♂️🌴
In my free time: watching a good soccer game, sometimes unfortunately also a bad one.
When I was little I wanted to be a pilot, today I’m a passenger.
If I hadn’t studied health management, I’d probably be tinkering with computers now.
This was the coolest internship: at Bike Citizens during my bachelor’s degree
This is where I spent the time after the lectures: in the car on the way back to Graz.
The best food on campus: the hunter’s schnitzel with croquettes at Remise.
My favorite place on campus: Andrea’s in the cafeteria.
This is how I celebrated my graduation: the bachelor’s degree on Mallorca, the master’s on Crete.
If my degree were an animal, it would be: a weasel, because it’s a nimble animal. In your studies, you are repeatedly confronted with the need to find solutions quickly.
This is what you definitely learn during your studies: networking and presenting.
The best course was: in the master’s program, event conception (risk planning & crisis situations).
Fun fact about your studies? In the bachelor’s program, there is a course called “Wellness”, which is considered one of the most curious courses in Europe.
Sometimes it doesn’t matter where you study, but more with whom and, above all, what. The course content must be right. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s in Miami, Vienna or Bad Gleichenberg.

My job is all about events and educational projects. I prepare events and accompany them on site. Working with schools to realise various projects is particularly exciting. Planning new events is also one of my main tasks – from the initial idea to the final realisation. I found my job through the alumni group on Facebook.
During my studies, I acquired many practical skills that help me today in my day-to-day work. I also improved my presentation skills, which are very important in my job. In my Master’s degree programme, I then dealt more intensively with technical event planning. What I particularly like about my job are the peaks. There are intense phases when there is a lot to do, but also quieter times when you can take a deep breath. The administrative tasks are less exciting. Event planning involves a lot of organisational and monotonous little things that just have to be done. Basically, however, hardly any two days are the same – every project brings new challenges. I like that.
In event management, you not only need people who are good at juggling lots of projects, but who are also resilient and able to take criticism. Setting priorities and keeping an overview is important. One of my next highlights will be the redesign of our Audimax. But first I’m going to get myself a coffee.
