The IT degree programmes at FH JOANNEUM Kapfenberg are characterised by their comprehensive computer science content, which also includes management, soft skills and languages. The Bachelor’s degree programmes give graduates access to every advanced Master’s degree programme in the Department of Applied Computer Science.
Head of Institute Sonja Gögele

The Institute of Software Design and Security at FH JOANNEUM is located in Kapfenberg. The institute’s degree programmes deal with many different areas of computer science and, of course, the associated application possibilities. IT security and mobile and web development are just two of the research specialisms at the institute. The institute’s Josef Ressel Centre also conducts research into time-series-based error prediction and avoidance.

The degree programmes

Computer science is and remains in demand – especially due to its constant further development. The digital world of work in the field of new information and communication technologies (ICT) offers many vacancies that often cannot be filled due to a lack of experts. A suitable computer science degree programme is the path to a possible ‘crisis-proof’ job.

The bachelor’s degree programmes Mobile Software Development (Co-op) and Software Design and Cloud Computing (full-time and part-time) provide a solid foundation for a successful IT career. The IT foundation is laid in six semesters. In addition, the Master’s degree programmes offer further skills in the areas of IT and Mobile Security and IT Law and Management.

Cooperation with regional companies enables the development of knowledge. This co-operation offers the Institute of Software Design and Security many opportunities. One of these is working on the information technologies of tomorrow. In recent years, the institute has also gained a great deal of experience in online teaching. Students benefit from these many years of experience.

Graduates enjoy excellent career prospects thanks to our training and the high demand for ICT experts.

Mobile Software Development – Bachelor’s programme, full-time / Co-op

Due to the digital transformation, IT specialists are more in demand than ever. The Bachelor’s degree programme in Mobile Software Development trains students to become IT experts. As the name suggests, the programme focuses in particular on mobile development. The degree programme teaches content relating to mobile software development. This takes place in two forms: theory at the University of Applied Sciences and practice in a company.

In the first and second semesters, students attend FH JOANNEUM in Graz full-time. From the third semester onwards, lessons take place on Mondays and Tuesdays at FH JOANNEUM Kapfenberg. Students spend the rest of the week gaining practical experience at a partner company.

Software Design and Cloud Computing – Bachelor’s degree programme, full-time

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Software Design and Cloud Computing provides students with the ideal foundation and is the start of a career as an IT professional. The practical training in the areas of computer science, web, programming, network and cloud technologies as well as software development prepares students perfectly for the professional world. Students also learn to understand and apply the links between business administration, law and IT.

Students are given the finishing touches by learning valuable soft skills that ensure success on the labour market. Finally, the practical semester provides a springboard into the professional world, in which students apply and consolidate the knowledge they have acquired in practice.

Software Design and Cloud Computing – Bachelor’s degree programme, part-time

The part-time Bachelor’s degree programme in Software Design and Cloud Computing offers a sound education in software architecture. The programme not only teaches students how to programme and implement software correctly. They are also taught the necessary fundamentals. These include databases, cloud and server technologies, network technology and much more. The programme also teaches valuable business, language and social skills.

The part-time organisation opens up new career prospects for students. On the one hand, existing knowledge can be deepened in a practical way, while on the other, the degree programme offers a perfect opportunity for a new professional orientation.

IT and Mobile Security – Master’s programme, part-time

The need for secure IT systems in the face of digitalisation is constantly increasing. This is where the Master’s degree programme in IT and Mobile Security steps in. Students are trained to become security experts. During the four semesters, they acquire expertise in the areas of secure software design solutions, cryptography and penetration testing.

Teachers on the degree programme develop secure information and communication technologies in close cooperation with leading Styrian industrial companies. The resulting knowledge is passed on to the students. The part-time organisation enables students to combine their studies, career and family.

IT Law and Management – Master’s programme, part-time

The Master’s degree programme in IT Law and Management creates the interface between IT and the social and business environment. The programme is based on three pillars: IT law, business management and technology. This enables students to maintain an overview in the complex world of work.

The programme offers a sound education in areas such as e-business, business law and IT compliance. The part-time organisation of the course and the associated high proportion of e-learning make it easier for students to combine their studies, career and family.
