The German course offer, which has been available for all degree programmes since summer term 2005, guaranteed already over 4000 exchange students, international degree seeking students, staff and since automne 2015 also asylum seekers (providing evidence that they have been enrolled in a university or another institute of tertiary education) free participation in one or more courses. Please note that course places are allocated according to the first come, first served principle.
For all German courses there is a minimum number of course registrations and a maximum group size of 20 participants. If the maximum group size is exceeded, you will automatically be placed on the waiting list and notified after the registration deadline. In the case of group splits, it is not possible to choose the group.
During the summer term 2026 the department of International Relations will again offer numerous German courses, which can be attended by all (incoming) students and employees and their next of kin (min. age 18 years). Potential applicants to FH JOANNEUM are also welcome to participate. The course offer includes grammar courses and competence courses (writing and reading, listening and speaking) as well as “Tandem+”. The courses will start at on 26 February 2026 in Graz, Kapfenberg and Bad Gleichenberg.
The course costs for language courses of 30 units of 45 minutes each (2 SWS) are as follows:
The enrolment for exchange students, degree seeking students, who already did a German course in the last semester and staff will take place ONLY online from 9-24. February 2026 at https://fhj.to/germancourseregistration-summer.
I am beginner WITHOUT any knowledge of the German language: You have never studied German before. You can join the courses German Beginners 1 (A1/1) and Tandem+. You have to register for these courses after the Orientation Programme in February 2026. During registration you have to pay € 20,- for the textbook Miteinander! A1/1. We will issue you a voucher that you bring along to the first lesson in order to get the book. Please note, that the price for the book is cheaper than in the bookstore as we buy a lot of them.
I have participated in the German intentensive course: If you passed the German Intensive Course A1/1 you can register for the courses German Beginners 2 (A1/2) and Tandem+. If you did NOT pass the German Intensive Course you can register for the courses German Beginners 1 (A1/1) and Tandem+. For both cases the registration takes place in February 2026. During registration you have to pay € 20,- for the textbook Miteinander! A1/2. We will issue you a voucher that you bring along to the first lesson in order to get the book. Please note, that the price for the book is cheaper than in the bookstore as we buy a lot of them.
I am neither beginner nor have I particpitated in the German intensive course:
If you have already studied German before (even just some lessons) you have to take the placement test in February 2026. You will get the results of your test immediately. You can register for as many courses as you want, respecting your level. The course system will be explained by our German team during registration. You can also read the course descriptions. During registration you have to pay € 20,- for our course material. We will issue you a voucher that you bring along to the first lesson in order to get the book. Please note, that the purchase of our printed material is mandatory and that any reproduction (e.g. photocopies) is not allowed.
Enrolment for all exchange students, who already assisted to one or more German course/s in the last semester/s, will take place ONLY online at https://forms.fh-joanneum.at/int/german-courses-students-staff-fhj/ from 9-24. February 2026. If you passed the exam of the courses in the last semester, you can join the follow-up courses (e.g. Beginner 3 (A2/1) in the winter term, Beginner 4 (A2/2) in the summer term). All courses are free of charge (except applicants), yet a small fee of € 20,00,- per course will be charged for teaching materials and / or the textbook. In the summer semester 2026, the International Relations Department offers two German courses as well as Tandem+ in Kapfenberg. The offer depends on the number of participants:
You can register to all courses online on 24 February 2026. Please note, that places are limited (first come, first served).
Courses in Kapfenberg start in March 2026.
All courses are free of charge and ECTS courses. € 20,00,- have to be paid for the course book or the course material. All students in Kapfenberg can also join all courses in Graz, if the course is not available in Kapfenberg or if there are time clashes with other courses in Kapfenberg. It is not allowed to choose an equal course (e.g. Grundstufe 1 (A1/1) in Kapfenberg and Graz!
Registration for all courses in Bad Gleichenberg for the above-mentioned target groups must be made online on 24 February 2026. The number of course places is limited.
Registrations or level changes for semester courses are only possible in certain cases and if so the latest two weeks after course start!
If you wish to attend the German courses at FH JOANNEUM you must provide evidence that you have been enrolled in a university or another institute of tertiary education equivalent to the Austrian education system in your home country during the online registration process (upload of documents). You will get a notification after the registration process with a link to the mandatory placement test. After the registration and having completed the test your qualifications will be assessed through a mandatory interview (invitation by e-mail).
Please note that places in a German course are subject to availability. You will be informed about the final acceptance by e-mail.
Your registration is complete after the online registration for the specific German courses upon inviation e-mail.

The German Language Competence Course prepares non-native speakers of German for studying at FH JOANNEUM. Applicants must demonstrate a German proficiency level of at least B1. You will complete the course with a certificate and the ÖSD examination “Zertifikat Deutsch B2“. You thus fulfil the language requirements for most Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes.
We are committed to your linguistic development at an academic level, but we also want to familiarise you with your future university during the Certificate Programme. This means intensive contact with your course of choice, while also getting to know all of the relevant university services which are on hand to support you during your studies.
