Interactive Projection Mapping as a Sales-Boosting Measure at the POS

In his bachelor’s thesis, Benjamin Höll explores interactive projection mapping as a sales-enhancing tool at the point of sale.

With the introduction of the World Wide Web, new sales portals are put online every day, which represent strong competition for classic retail. Consumers are flooded with thousands of advertising impressions every day. Regional distributors are hit particularly hard by this. In addition to financial difficulties, they often face closure without reorientation.

With the help of literature research and expert interviews, important information was gained directly from the industry to develop a new concept for point of sale and offline retail. This made it possible to examine the reason for the existence of offline sales, which, in the best-case scenario, could be extended to other forms of distribution through an omnichannel strategy.

The concept created uses projection mapping and interactive touchscreens at the point of sale to significantly improve the customer experience. In addition, an increase in attention, savings in sales space and resources, as well as a sales-enhancing effect were achieved, which was reflected in a future-oriented shopping experience.

The concept developed was then implemented using the winter sports industry as an example. Due to the complexity of the topic and the different circumstances, it cannot be used generally. The concept needs to be adapted for implementation in other areas. To achieve a contemporary design of the point of sale, constant further development and research in this area are necessary.
