Institute of

Design & Communication

At the Institute of Design & Communication we train designers with the ability to think critically. They learn to consider the economic, social, cultural and technological backgrounds in order to design effectively for society.

Design expertise and skills, user-centred methods and field research are all important components of our degree programmes. By working together in interdisciplinary groups, students become practiced in cooperating with business, design agencies and cultural institutions. A range of prizes and our successful graduates all demonstrate the benefits of this approach. It is these characteristics which make our programmes unique, both in Austria and beyond.

Research fields

The institute’s research focusses on Interaction and learning in real and virtual environments. The study programmes are dedicated to game-based learning and serious game design, i.e. the development of games for knowledge transfer. Another focus is on professional training simulations that utilise real-time 3D environments and real-world interfaces.

Another field of research at the institute is Information Design in Media and Interaction Spaces, which combines expertise in visual communication, exhibition design and responsive environments. The focus is always on the users and a clear, tangible communication of content.

In the area of Human-centred design in cooperative and interdisciplinary networks, the institute researches what interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary design education can look like in an international context. This results in projects with universities aimed at strategic development, modern knowledge management and strengthening international competitiveness.

Collaboration opportunities

  • Collaboration with partners in research contracts or funded research projects
  • Exploration of research questions as part of Bachelor’s and Master’s theses
