Every year, the world’s population consumes more resources than the planet can sustainably regenerate. Earth Overshoot Day marks this critical point and emphasises the urgency of sustainable action. This bachelor’s thesis examines the significance of data storytelling for environmental and sustainability communication and explores how it can be used to raise awareness about Earth Overshoot Day.
To address this issue, a comprehensive literature review, an expert interview, and an analysis of relevant examples were conducted. The project, an interactive website on Earth Overshoot Day, demonstrates how visual storytelling can be used to communicate environmental and sustainability issues in an engaging and understandable way. However, it is advisable to combine data storytelling with other communication approaches to promote long-term climate-friendly decisions.
