Social media has become an integral part of our everyday lives. However, as in the analogue world, certain barriers exist that make it difficult for people with disabilities to participate. This thesis examines the accessible design of social media content, particularly on TikTok and Instagram, for people with visual and hearing impairments. The aim was to analyse and demonstrate how social media content can be made accessible.
Through interviews with experts, comprehensive literature research and detailed analysis of existing content, an accessible account on TikTok and Instagram was created and used. Accessibility in social media can be achieved using subtitles, alternative texts, correct captions, simple language, and good contrast. The results illustrate not only the ethical relevance, but also the strategic benefits for companies of creating accessible content. As a workpiece, the results were published as summarised videos and visuals on the ‘EinfachBarrierefrei’ accounts on TikTok and Instagram.
