Influence and Manipulation Through Advertising

In her master’s thesis, Verena Fürnholzer examines how design can intentionally influence emotions, decisions and actions and which persuasive methods are most effective for both designers and consumers.

Have you already manipulated someone positively today? And if so, how? What strategies did you use to make your advertising stronger, more effective, more meaningful, or even more manipulative? How have you managed to influence people’s emotions, decisions, and actions? Was it deliberate manipulation or a planned strategy? This work deals with the following questions. Which design and influencing methods are most effective, how can designers apply and benefit from them, and what do consumers say or think about them?
