With the launch of the RADIUS project (Research in Artificial Intelligence for Development, Innovation and Upgraded Security), AI research at FH JOANNEUM will become even more comprehensive. This project aims to further develop the research and application of artificial intelligence for systems, software engineering and IT security in the best possible way.

RADIUS project overview

The RADIUS project started on January 1, 2025 and will run until December 31, 2029. With a budget of € 1,750,395 and a dedicated team of currently 28 experts, it is FH JOANNEUM’s largest COIN project until now.

The RADIUS project will enable FH JOANNEUM to double its already very high level of expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) research. The new complementary RADIUS AI research group ideally complements the existing expertise of the Josef Ressel Center for Time Series Based Failure Prediction and Prevention and that of the associated specialist departments. In addition, the specialist research focuses of the Institute of Software Design and Security are optimally linked with the topic of AI.

Objectives and methods

The main goal of RADIUS is to build up comprehensive expertise in the field of generative AI and large language models (LLMs). By researching and developing AI applications in software engineering and IT security, the aim is to develop new best practices, frameworks and training courses that revolutionize industrial applications.

RADIUS project organization focus on work packages

The RADIUS project is divided into 6 work packages (WP) and responsible work package managers:

  • WP1: Project Management – Helmut Lindner
  • WP2: AI Systems – Michael Hammer
  • WP3: AI for Software Engineering – Helmut Lindner
  • WP4: AI for Security – Klaus Gebeshuber
  • WP5: Use Cases – Patrick Deininger
  • WP6: Dissemination – Willi Zugaj

Join the RADIUS projet and become a project partner company

The development of expertise in the field of generative AI and large language models forms the basis of this project. As a project partner company, you have the opportunity to benefit from the findings of our funded research and to help shape and utilize the project’s subject areas.

Cooperation in this project opens up the following opportunities for you, among others:

  • Optimize the security of software with generative AI.
  • Reduce your workload with AI-supported documentation generation.
  • Simplify your customer support with AI-driven chatbots.
  • Improve the entire software engineering process with generative AI, such as automated creation of test cases from existing code, automated vulnerability analysis and supported migration of legacy systems.
  • Minimize the effort involved in software development through accompanying AI measures and the use of AI tools.

The needs of the economy are important to us, which is why we would particularly like to invite you to contribute current topics to the project and help shape the funding project.

If you are interested, please contact the project manager Helmut Lindner or one of the work package managers. We look forward to hearing from you.

Significance and prospects of the RADIUS project

The RADIUS project is setting new standards in AI research and development. With a clear vision and strong partners at its side, the way is paved for innovative breakthroughs and secure technologies. We look forward to the exciting developments that this project will bring and to successful collaborations.
