Transferring Control / Autonomous truck

Master´s Thesis in cooperation with Magna, Austria.

Max Gugenhan’s master’s thesis for the Industrial Design degree programme shows a new generation of trucks, that enables a simple transition from autonomous to human driving in critical situations.

The truck is designed to drive fully autonomously on the motorway and semi-autonomously off the highway. In semi-autonomous driving, a person is travelling with the truck who can intervene at any time during the journey. These people take over the truck at a designated hub.

This hub is located outside the city at a strategically placed location with motorway access. On the motorway, the trucks drive in platooning mode. To achieve a special aerodynamic shape, the cab of the lorries is removable. This allows the tractor unit to drive under the vehicle in front. This innovative vehicle is a pioneering development for the modern transport industry.
