How Do Animated Visuals Influence the Perception of Metal Concerts?

In her bachelor’s thesis, Hannah Dornan explores how animated visuals affect the experience of metal concerts.

This bachelor’s thesis investigates how the experience of live concerts can be enhanced by integrating pre-produced visuals created by innovative animation and editing techniques. The project was realized in collaboration with the metal band ‘Mitakpa’, based in Graz, whose musical performances are supported by animated videos. During the project, theoretical backgrounds concerning audiovisual art, the significance of live concerts, and the perception of image and sound were explored, with a detailed examination of how the videos are produced.

Proof of concept was carried out in the form of a blind study at a live concert at ‘Explosiv’ in Graz. The audience was divided into two groups. One experienced the concert with visuals, the other one without. Throughout the analysis of the perceptions of both groups, the impact of the visuals was evaluated, and the experiences were compared. The aim of the work is to demonstrate how visuals can be integrated as an additional layer of communication and emotion in live performances and how they can add value to a performance.
