A board game
Due to their ability to pollinate flowers, bees play a valuable role in the world’s ecosystem. Yet, in recent times the number of bees has been dwindling because of the phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to use the medium of board games to spread awareness and teach children about the importance and endangerment of the species.
„Getümmel auf der Blumenwiese” is a competitive game for two to four players. In the game the players dive into the role of the bees to establish their own beehive. Through this playful method, important facts about bees are shared with the players. During the conception of this board game, research was conducted on bees to design the elements of the game as close to reality as possible. Moreover, different game mechanics were examined to enhance the gameplay experience for children. This bachelor’s thesis documents the process of creating the board game, the building and testing of prototypes as well as the final design of the various game elements.
