Gender Grafik Design

Possibilities of visual representation of gender diversity

Bernadette Stark’s bachelor thesis deals with possibilities of visual representation of gender diversity.

In Western society, gender is mostly assumed to be binary: male or female. These gender roles are shaped and reproduced by stereotypes and clichés. This overlooks the fact that gender extends far beyond biological characteristics and is by no means binary. The shift towards more diversity and a more sensitive representation of gender is slow because these views are deeply rooted. Gender is often assigned based on external characteristics, which represent stereotypical attributes. Designers frequently orient themselves towards outdated, stereotypical target groups and clichéd conventions. The responsibility to break these and promote a more diverse representation of gender is often not adequately recognised.

This work examines gender diversity in graphic design and seeks ways to integrate it into design practice. Comprehensive research and surveys with designers and genderqueer individuals revealed attitudes and needs regarding gender sensitivity in graphics and illustration, which led to recommendations on how this can be achieved. The central finding is that gender diversity cannot be fully depicted, as gender identities are highly individual, and viewers usually assume binary genders. Gender should not be marked by external characteristics but should be fundamentally questioned. This can be promoted by disrupting stereotypes and drawing attention to diversity. There are many rigid ways of thinking to break before complete openness and understanding of gender diversity can be achieved. Until then, it is the task of graphic designers to break norms, act in a gender-sensitive manner, and raise awareness of these issues.
