“Lyrika” is a reading furniture piece located at the Berggarten Pavilion in the Austrian Sculpture Park. The intervention extends the pavilion into a a place for encounter, exchange and lingering.
Within the framework of the master’s programme, students developed and presented various concepts for an open bookcase. The proposal “Lyrika” was selected for realisation and implemented on site.
Design Concept
The design of “Lyrika” is conceived as a spatial response to its surroundings. Its formal language draws on the ground plan of the adjacent water lily pond, translating this spatial reference into a composition of recurring 80- and 100-degree angles. Transparent coloured surfaces generate a dynamic interplay of reflection and translucency, allowing the object to engage with changing light conditions and its natural context.
Rather than functioning solely as a piece of furniture, the open bookcase is more a spatial intervention. An integrated bench extends its use beyond storage and reading, creating an inviting setting for sitting and lingering. In this way, “Lyrika” situates itself within the productive tension between landscape, architecture and art in public space.
Realisation
The semester project included both the conceptual development and the full technical and material realisation of the design. The students were responsible for all stages of implementation, from CAD-based construction to the fabrication of the timber and acrylic components and final on-site assembly.
Project Team
“Lyrika” was developed and realised by Ina Keßler, Luisa Kraft and Juliana Melzer (AUD25).
The project was supervised by Anke Strittmayer, Anika Kronberger, Lucia Jarosova, Brian Luque Marcos and Christoph Neuhold.
