“What defines us as an institute? Firstly, a proven industrial engineering degree programme that perfectly combines business and technical content. Secondly, a dedicated team of lecturers who are passionate about imparting knowledge. And thirdly, our students, who prove time and again what is possible with their talent and commitment.”

Head of Institute Martin Tschandl

Who we are and what makes us special

As a training centre for industrial engineers, we have been combining the fields of business, engineering and IT / digitalisation to provide an interdisciplinary education with a future since 1995. As one of the oldest institutes at FH JOANNEUM, we stand for extensive expertise, practical learning and the use of state-of-the-art technologies.

Research and development

The Institute of Industrial Management is dedicated to researching and organising the entire (industrial) value chain. The focus is on future-oriented approaches such as the integration of new technologies, the optimisation of processes on the shop floor, Industry 5.0 and the core topics of sustainability, people and resilience. The aim is to make companies fit for future challenges through innovative approaches. The research work is divided into five specialised groups:

  • Work of the future: Designing modern working environments that focus on people and make optimum use of the potential of digitalisation and automation.
  • Controlling and service engineering: Development of efficient control mechanisms and innovative services to support decision-making and business processes.
  • Digital Shopfloor Analytics: Use of data analytics and digital technologies to optimise production processes and quality management on the shopfloor.
  • ERP & MES Systems: Research into integrated company and production systems to promote efficient and automated processes.
  • Supply Chain Management: Development of sustainable, resilient and high-performance supply chains to ensure competitiveness.

With these focal points, the institute makes a decisive contribution to shaping a future-proof, sustainable and technologically leading industry.

The Smart Production Lab

The Smart Production Lab at the Institute of Industrial Management forms the technological basis for practice-orientated research and teaching. As a state-of-the-art laboratory, it is used to simulate and test innovative production processes, digital technologies and new automation solutions. Real production scenarios are simulated here in order to investigate the interaction between man, machine and software in an Industry 5.0 environment. The lab offers an ideal platform for testing and further developing smart technologies such as IoT, AI-supported analyses and cyber-physical systems. In this way, the Smart Production Lab supports the implementation of the latest research findings in practical solutions and strengthens the link between science and industry.

Study with a future: combining business, technology and innovation

The degree programmes at the Institute of Industrial Management at FH JOANNEUM combine business, technology and digitalisation to create a future-oriented education. They offer the perfect combination of sound theoretical knowledge and practical skills – ideal for being successful in the age of artificial intelligence. An excellent choice for anyone who wants to transform companies, shape innovative technologies and master complex challenges with confidence.

The personal benefits of the degree programme:

The degree programme provides a deep understanding of economic and technical interrelationships and shows how these are applied in practice. Digitalisation, Industry 4.0, supply chain and industrial sustainability are the central topics – always with a view to the requirements of the modern working world.

State-of-the-art technologies are used in the Smart Production Lab, including SAP S/4 Hana, XCargo and Adonis as well as additive manufacturing (3D printers), rapid prototyping, (Industrial) Internet of Things, cyber security, AI and data analytics. This practical training makes it possible to optimise complex production processes, digitalise business models and develop innovative solutions.

The unique combination of business, technical and digital know-how makes graduates sought-after experts in a labour market that is increasingly focusing on innovation and transformation.

Graduates are ideally prepared for careers that combine business and technical expertise. Possible positions include production manager, supply chain expert, project manager or digitalisation specialist.

The Institute of Industrial Management stands for a modern education that not only develops graduates professionally, but also personally – a degree programme that actively shapes the future of industry.

Ideas become reality – with your thesis

Our students conduct research where the future is made: in industry. Whether you want to make production processes smarter, design sustainable supply chains or understand global markets – you will find the right topic for your thesis with us. Our subject areas offer scope for a spirit of research, practical relevance and future relevance.

How can companies make their production processes more efficient? How can a global supply network be made more resilient? What does digital transformation mean in concrete terms for an industrial company?

Whether alone or together with a company: Our students develop solutions, concepts and investigate highly topical and exciting issues from the industrial environment. The topics range from smart manufacturing and sustainable supply chains to innovative business models in the digital age.

Our theses are part of real change: they provide a basis for decision-making, show new paths – and have an impact on teaching, practice and often directly on the careers of our graduates.

Whether hidden champion or world market leader – over 550 projects and more than twice as many theses show that we are a part of the future of industry: Our students are helping to shape the future of industry – and that often starts with their final thesis.

We can help you turn it into a thesis – practical, scientifically sound and with real added value. Let’s shape the future together:

  • Digitalisation & Industry 4.0: When data is the new resource – how do we shape the digital transformation in industry? From digital transformation and ERP systems to IoT and augmented reality on the shop floor.
  • Supply Chain Management & Logistics: When supply chains become smarter – how do we secure global supply with a local mind? Increasing efficiency, strategic purchasing and Logistics 4.0 are not just buzzwords here, but fields of research.
  • Corporate management & controlling: When management is rethought – how do companies remain profitable and innovative at the same time? Topics relating to innovation cycles, service engineering and performance management are central pillars.
  • Sustainability & resource management: When green industry is no longer a vision – how do we measure and manage sustainable processes? From environmental controlling to energy efficiency – we are working on the future viability of the industry.
  • Internationality & interculturality: When markets know no borders – how do companies operate in a global context? Our topics range from market entry strategies to questions of business ethics.
  • People & organisation: When technology meets culture – how do we reshape work, leadership and collaboration? Leadership 4.0, digital competences and change processes are key topics of our research.

Top-quality study programmes

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Industrial Management and the Master’s degree programme in International Industrial Management are accredited to the highest international standards. Both courses have been audited by FIBAA – a prestigious agency that specialises in the quality of study programmes.

FIBAA stands for quality and excellence in academic education and ensures that the degree programmes not only meet current and national requirements, but also make our graduates internationally competitive.

What is the FIBAA seal?

It shows that a degree programme meets the highest standards in terms of content, teaching methods and professional preparation. The Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Management was awarded the FIBAA seal, and the Master’s degree even received the FIBAA Premium Seal, a distinction that only a few degree programmes receive. Our degree programmes are therefore among the best (top 2%) of 2,600 universities and degree programmes worldwide.

Why is this important?

This accreditation confirms that graduates are ideally prepared for careers as industrial engineers – in areas such as digitalisation, technology and business.

What are the benefits of FIBAA accreditation for students/alumni?

  • An internationally recognised, high-quality qualification.
  • Greater opportunities on the labour market and better positioning with employers.
  • Easier access to international degree programmes and career opportunities.
  • Benefit from the strong reputation of the degree programme and the university.
