– Learning from Experience with Rob Britton

On March 23, 2026, Rob Britton visited the Institute of Aviation at FH JOANNEUM – a guest who knows more about crisis management in aviation than what’s found in textbooks. As a former executive at American Airlines, he guided the airline through the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and shared his experiences with students and guests.

Even before the official start at 17:00, the lecture hall at FH JOANNEUM was already filled with curious and engaged students and guests. During an informal meet & greet, Rob Britton took his time to answer questions, exchange thoughts, and connect with the audience. What quickly became clear: this was not going to be a one-way lecture, but a genuine dialogue.

From the very first moments, Britton’s approachable and energetic personality set the tone. With decades of experience in the airline industry – including his role in helping American Airlines navigate the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks – he combines deep expertise with a remarkable ability to engage his audience.

True to his aviation background, he aimed to start exactly on time, joking that in aviation, a delay of just a few minutes would already raise questions about why the aircraft is not yet on the runway. The light humour carried throughout the session and created an atmosphere that made learning both accessible and enjoyable – something Britton himself emphasized as essential: if you are not having fun while learning, something is missing.

A Crisis-Prone Industry and the Importance of Preparation

At the beginning of his talk, he shared a personal perspective on crisis management, reflecting on how early life experiences shaped his resilience and his ability to deal with challenging situations later in his career. This personal connection made it clear that crisis management is not only about processes and structures, but also about mindset and attitude.

Throughout the lecture, Britton highlighted why the airline industry is particularly prone to crises. From operational challenges and financial pressures to geopolitical developments, extreme weather, and the complex dependency on numerous stakeholders – airlines operate in an environment where disruptions are almost inevitable. What matters, he stressed, is not whether a crisis occurs, but how prepared an organization is to handle it.

A central point of the lecture was the strong focus on practical insights and real-world application – a core value that reflects the approach of FH JOANNEUM as a University of Applied Sciences. Rather than remaining on a purely theoretical level, Britton shared concrete experiences and actionable lessons from his extensive career in the airline industry.

This hands-on perspective became particularly evident when discussing crisis management strategies. Preparation, clear communication, and taking responsibility were not presented as abstract concepts, but illustrated through real-life examples. Britton emphasized the importance of involving frontline staff, fostering a strong safety culture, and maintaining transparent communication – especially in the early stages of a crisis, when public perception is shaped.

By linking theory with hands-on experience, the lecture demonstrated the added value of applied sciences education: equipping students not only with knowledge, but with the ability to apply it effectively in complex, real-world situations.

Lessons Learned: Communication, Responsibility and Resilience

At the same time, he underlined that organizations must not lose sight of their core business during difficult times. Continuing operations, keeping promises, and maintaining credibility are just as important as managing the crisis itself. Equally essential is the ability to learn from past events, adapt, and continuously improve.

What made the session particularly valuable was the openness of the discussion. Questions were welcomed at any time and answered with enthusiasm, turning the lecture into an interactive exchange rather than a static presentation.

Of course, this summary can only capture a fraction of the insights shared during the evening. We sincerely hope that Rob Britton will return to FH JOANNEUM in the future – and perhaps next time, even more of you will have the chance to experience his unique perspective on crisis management firsthand.
