A degree programme that can be flexibly combined with work and life? Sarah Werner lives in Frankfurt and is studying Content Strategy at FH JOANNEUM – without having to be on site every day. Thanks to blocked attendance phases and digital collaboration, it is possible to study from any location. In this article, she explains how this works and why she opted for this innovative Master’s degree programme.

How Sarah came from Frankfurt to Graz

‘It was actually a coincidence that I came across FH JOANNEUM,’ says Sarah. A lecturer who taught at her university in Darmstadt spoke so enthusiastically about content strategy that she became curious. After a Google search, a visit to the Open House and a few thoughts, she realised that this was exactly the right degree programme for me!

Study flexibly: Perfect for working people

Sarah lives in Frankfurt and only comes to Graz for attendance weeks and weekend seminars. She completes the majority of her degree programme digitally – with online lectures, group work and interactive tasks. ‘At the beginning, I wondered how travelling to Graz would work. But now it has become completely normal for me. I can no longer imagine going to university every day.’

This flexibility makes it possible for her to work as a student trainee at Accenture alongside her studies. ‘I work in marketing and communication and can bring many aspects of content strategy directly into my job.’

Learning in a new way – Slack, remote & teamwork

One of the biggest differences to traditional degree programmes is digital collaboration. ‘Our main communication takes place via Slack – not only with other students, but also with lecturers. This means we are constantly connected, can ask questions at any time and get answers quickly.’

Group work also plays a major role. ‘You have to be prepared to work collaboratively. If you prefer to work on tasks on your own, you should think twice about studying. But it’s perfect for me because I learn so much through the dialogue.’

Challenges & opportunities

Of course, studying while working brings its own challenges. ‘You have to organise yourself well and be prepared to plan flexibly – especially if you’re coming from further away. But every time I’m in Graz, I realise how much I love my studies.’

Another challenge is the broad range of topics: content strategy covers many different areas, from user experience and corporate communication to strategic brand management. ‘Sometimes you have no idea what exactly to expect in a subject – but that’s exactly what makes it exciting.’

Who is the Master Content Strategy programme suitable for?

Sarah recommends the programme especially for

✔ Team players who want to work collaboratively
✔ Open-minded & curious people who are open to new topics
✔ Professionals who want to study flexibly
✔ Digital natives who like to work remotely and use modern tools

Conclusion

The Master’s degree programme in Content Strategy at FH JOANNEUM offers a flexible and modern study structure that is perfect for working professionals and international students. Sarah has managed to combine her life in Frankfurt with studying in Graz – and proves that digital education is the future.
