The program was led by Maja Pivec from Institute of Design and Communication at FH JOANNEUM Graz and organized in cooperation with the Hochschule der Medien Stuttgart (Germany) and the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia).
Participants gained foundational knowledge of gamification and understood how serious games can address real-world challenges. They applied motivational principles, conducted fieldwork to explore cultural dynamics, and used research insights to design engaging and culturally aware games or apps. Teams prototyped creative solutions within given constraints and improved interdisciplinary collaboration and media communication skills.
Scope of Work and Outcome
Students worked in interdisciplinary teams to develop gamified, practical solutions using diverse media. Final prototypes were presented on the last day of the on-site phase, followed by feedback from experts and peers. Together they gained hands-on experience, enhanced their collaboration skills, and expanded their professional portfolios with an innovative project.
The participating students were asked to develop a gamified solution – an app, a service, or a game – around the theme of connecting cultures. Creative interpretations of the topic were encouraged.
The first day kicked off with a warm-up programme focused on intercultural exchange and introducing the challenge theme. Participants were officially welcomed by Vice-Rector (FH) Martina König and Daniel Fabry, Head of the Institute of Design & Communication. The day also included inspiring visits to “Unter freiem Himmel” and “Henx”, both agencies are founded by our former students.
Over the next three days, students worked in six interdisciplinary teams. Each group included members from all three partner universities, combining diverse skill sets and academic backgrounds.
The final presentations took place on June 14th, showcasing a wide range of creative outcomes – from digital games and board games to a variety of innovative gamified apps. Thanks to all students for their great work!
