An inspiring week of collaboration, learning, and intercultural exchange at FH JOANNEUM

From 18.-22.05.2026 we had the pleasure of hosting 30 participants from 5 continents for our Staff Week focused on Energy, Security and Society. Among the attendees were representatives from several EU4Dual partner universities.

The week began with a keynote speech on comprehensive security by Pia Viklund, leader of the Centre of Excellence for Comprehensive Security at SAVONIA University of Applied Sciences, setting an engaging tone for the discussions ahead. During the afternoon, we explored the city together and enjoyed an intercultural food sharing event in the evening, a perfect way to connect and share a bit of home from each corner of the world.

The next day, Ville Berg from SAVONIA led a workshop on IT security, focusing on understanding the modern threat landscape. The afternoon took us to the historic Gösser Brewery in Leoben, where we visited the production site, spoke to dual education students, and enjoyed a beer tasting.

Midweek, we traveled to campus Kapfenberg, where Patrick Deininger from the Institute Software Design and Security facilitated an engaging workshop on IT security, titled „How to Hack a Server in Four Commands“. Christof Sumereder from the Institute Energy, Transport and Environmental Management led a session on energy security, focusing on blackouts and how to prevent them. We were also given a guided tour of the Energy Analytics and Solution Lab.

On Thursday, we shifted the focus to healthcare, as Judy Gore, Eva Schaller and Nina Goger from FH JOANNEUM’s health care department introduced the participants to the key principles of patient safety though a high-fidelity simulation experience. Maria José Catalao, Nuno Carrajola, and Antonio Casanova from Portalegre Polytechnic University held a workshop on hand hygiene as the cornerstone of patient safety.

We wrapped up the week with a reflection session, sharing takeaways, insights, and new connections. This Staff Week was a testament to the power of coming together, learning from one another, and building bridges across cultures and disciplines.

A huge thank you to all contributors and participants for making this such a memorable and enriching experience. We look forward to continuing these conversations and collaborations in the future!
