Data Visualisation in Graphic Design

This thesis focuses on data visualisation, with emphasis on representing the diversity and significance of snow in Austria. The goal was to visually present complex data in a coffee table book in an understandable and visually pleasing way, aiming to enhance the reader’s understanding and appreciation of snow. The book contains a combination of visualisations, illustrations, and photographs to transmit knowledge and establish an emotional connection to the subject. The theoretical part of this work addresses the fundamentals of data visualisation, including its historical development, basics of visual perception, and principles of design aesthetics. The visualisations were evaluated by individuals from the design industry as well as from other professional backgrounds. The insights gained from these evaluations were then analysed and applied. This thesis contributes to the development and understanding of visualisation techniques, demonstrating how complex data can be made accessible to a broad audience using creative methods.
