Key data

Job description: University lecturer
Company: FH JOANNEUM
I work in: Kapfenberg, Austria
I've worked here since: 2019
Contact: rene.schuster@fh-joanneum.at

What I do:

In my role as internship supervisor, I serve as an interface between the students, FH JOANNEUM and partner companies. New partners need to be recruited and supervised as well as target agreements established with the students and companies. It is particularly important for me that all students are allocated a suitable internship post. This is just a brief insight into this fascinating and varied field of responsibility.

My core fields of work also include teaching and research. In addition to holding lots of classes, there are always new issues to explore and scientific essays to be written. My third core field is to organise symposiums and conferences and provide support to the head of the degree programme.

What I love about my job:

  • Constant learning
  • Always making contact with new people
  • Flexible and varied work

What I don't like so much about my job:

  • The distribution of the workload.
  • The workload is naturally higher during the semester whereas it is quieter during the university holidays. The latter is a good time for preparatory work.

Important skills in my job:

  • Sociable
  • Good at reacting quickly to changes
  • Enjoy teaching

My biggest success / my greatest experience

When I travel to a company and know that the students will be in good hands there and that the company perfectly complements our training. I can then be sure that the best results will be achieved for the students, the company and my degree programme Mobile Software Development as well as for me as an internship supervisor. This has been a frequent experience to date.

How I found my current job:

After my first post at FH JOANNEUM, it was clear to me that I wanted to do teaching myself one day. After a few years of working in the private sector, this opportunity arose and I grabbed it straight away.

What I learned for this job during my studies:

Absolutely everything! Virtually everything I learned on the course is relevant to my teaching and research. In particular, the conduct of my former lecturers, many of whom are now my colleagues, gave me an idea of how I would like to lecture in the future. I have also been able to apply lots of useful content and knowledge from my course in my career, especially in the fields of organisation and project management.

Job prospects in my field:

At FH JOANNEUM and in general with an academic career, there is the opportunity to start work as a research assistant straight after graduating. This primarily involves working on research and projects but may also include some teaching duties.

I am:

  • … always 100% committed to whatever task I am doing.
  • … open to new things. *… someone who prefers to tackle things rather than find excuses.

About my job:

In my current role, I work in a range of fields: whether in teaching where I am constantly learning new things or in research which I can incorporate into my classes. Working as an internship supervisor enables me to continually make new contacts and encounter exciting companies with different cultures. All of this makes this the perfect job for me right now. It has always been important to me to enjoy my work and feel fulfilled.
