Speech and Language Therapy Summer School (SLT) 2014 in Malta

Sharing from our learning and learning from our sharing.

In August 2014, the annual SLT Summer School took place. The event was held at the University of Malta, situated on the largest of the three Maltese islands in the Mediterranean.

The SLT Summer School was attended by 120 logopedics students from 19 institutes all over the world, in particular from the European countries, America (USA) and Asia (Hong Kong, Taiwan). The participants seized the opportunity to expand their personal horizons by exchanging ideas with international experts and students.

The individual days were divided into a morning programme when the international experts would give talks on current scientific topics and an afternoon programme with simultaneous workshops on individual aspects of the day’s topic. The lunch break was the perfect time to establish social contacts and recharge the batteries. Packed lunches were given out and there was a chance to enjoy the Mediterranean sea air at the University of Malta campus.

The five key topics of the SLT Summer School 2014 were “Interprofessional Education (IPE)”, “Challenges for school age-children and young adults”, “Emerging issues and new trends in SLT”, “Application for technology and implications for SLT’s” and “Early intervention and promotion”.

In addition to the diverse subject-specific programme, students at the host university also organised various leisure activities centred around the geography and culture of this Mediterranean island. These included various excursions to the beach and sea as well as a boat trip to Comino, the smallest of the three Maltese islands.

The Maltese Evening as an opening event and the Barbecue Evening as a final celebration provided the ideal setting for participants to submerse themselves in Malta’s culinary world.

Two Logopedics students took part in the congress and returned packed with valuable experiences and a recommendation to other students on the course to take advantage of this fantastic offer from FH JOANNEUM, which is unique in Austria.
